Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

It's so cool Jane Schoenbrun got a chance to make a movie in the Camp Miasma franchise. Like a lot of people I grew up on that series, seeing Little Death slash & tear young and nubile young campers around camp or in New York and even outer space. I Saw the TV Glow was such an awesome movie and I really do need to give Worlds Fair another watch, maybe next time I can find it's wavelength. But anyway, it's good to see new and experimental filmmakers see what they can do with a genre as long lasting and elemental as the slasher genre.

I really loved Hacks it's such a fun show and it's been cool to Hannah Einbinder grow as an actress. The show had it's final season this year and I ended up marathoning all the old episodes before the finale hit and you really get to see Ava Daniels and her grow with the series. Hannah also had a stand up special a few years ago that was very good. Really looking forward to whatever happens next with her career.

Oh and of course Gillian Anderson, she's been great forever now. People expect you to talk about X-Files but really one of her first big returns was in Hannibal as Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier. The show never had a Clarice Starling but Bedelia has facets of that trainee as she matches whits with the cannibal doctor and even runs away with him for a bit. The mood of her Bedelia captures much more where she's at in this movie than Dana Scully. These games of slashings and serial killings are old hat and she's an old pro.

I really love the way Jane Schoenbru captures the way people think and obsess over media, from an obscure region of the Internet to an old tv show and an 80s slasher series with one too many sequels. It's never about this or that piece of media being perfect, it never could because it's made by humans. But it really doesn't matter if the quality of something is good or bad, that's beside the point. Whatever your favorite book or movie or tv show or video game or whatever will always be important to you if it hits you in the right place and time and inspires all new works that could become original works or grow into new sequels to help the idea live on.

This is also Jane Schoenbru making her mark in the new slasher renaissance we've been into for a bit. This is a legacy sequel and also a reinvention, it shares DNA with the Halloween reboot trilogy and the return of Scream and Happy Death Day and Detention (2011) and Heart Eyes. It's so raw and so meta and captures why these elements of pop culture always return from the bottom of the lake. It was very nice to see Jasmin Savoy Brown, I still doubt I'll ever watch Scream VII for ethical reasons but I do miss the Melissa Barrera Scream trilogy that never was.

This has been my most anticipated movie of the year. This is my Odyssey or Dune 3 or Doomsday. In general it takes a lot for me to actually get hyped for something now. When I saw the trailers for Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma I couldn't wrap my head around how it could work as a movie and I often had that same reaction when watching the movie. And I still kind of feel that way after watching the movie.
But I think it did inspire me to create something new.
