VHS
VHS an obsolete form of media that used a specific design style that really appeals to me. Partly nostalgia and partly just being on the wavelength that it really appealed to. Below you will find a class project as well as independently created VHS covers.
Fake Horror & Sci-Fi VHS Boxes
I have a love for old horror movies good and bad. When I want to practice in Photoshop I’ll often come up with my own idea for a fake movie and a cover design to go with it.
Since this is on a very small budget all source images are used from multiple movies to frame a possible story around.
Alien rip offs have been around forever. For this one I imagined a world of strange beings, gods and ghosts all crammed into one convoluted 90 minutes.
The design for this tape was inspired by 70s environmental nature attack movies like Frogs, Grizzly and Day of the Animals. The title design is meant to evoke the coming danger from those who we share the Earth with.
The idea for this box came from 90s cyber thrillers like Lawnmower Man, Virtuosity and The Net. The Internet is still uncharted territory and it could improve all of society!…or secretly betray us. It’s meant to look futuristic, but in a way that only existed for a brief time.
Inspired weird midnight movies of the 70s like El Top and Holy Mountain. It sells itself as a horror movie, but is really something more out there and philosophical.
This box continues the tradition of slashes based on holidays, like Halloween and April Fool’s Day. Columbus has already been seen as more and more the monster he was, so it made sense to spin that into the direction of a horror movie.
Mad Max was very popular and inspired many rip offs such as 1999: Bronx Warriors and Battletruck. This takes the spirit of those and mashes them into a grand adventure with the heroes having to battle through several sub genres to make it to a possible paradise.
Horror anthologies are not the most popular genre, but their mix of tales can lead to movies with more than one idea going on and a chance for multiple filmmakers to have a chance to succeed. This was inspired by such entries as Grim Prairie Tales and Creepshow.
Whale Tales
I came up with a kid’s cartoon series called Whale Tales! It would be a show filled with many colorful ocean characters, adventure and even some almost educational moments. The design covered the first three tapes in the series.
